Importance of Motivation in Workplace. Management is getting things done with and through others. In order to be successful management, a manager must be able to understand the people through whom he gets his job done.

According to Tiffm (1974), the productivity of the employee depends on two aspects, his ability, and motivation. 

Hence the study of motivation is important on the following counts.

  • Managers use the high ability of manpower.
  • In the working place, workers show a high positive attitude to work and the company
  • Increased efficiency of the worker through motivation.
  • Labor turnover is decreased by the proper motivation of the worker.
  • Managers must be able to predict the behaviors of their employees correctly 
  • Managers must believe that there are no average persons. Unless managers understand the complexity and individuality of people, they may misapply the generalizations about motivation, leadership, and communication. This knowledge is essential to predict their behavior.
  • Modern organizations are made up of people of heterogeneous backgrounds in terms of religion, language, education, and gender. Managers must understand this Workforce diversity.
  • Globalization has intensified competition. In order to survive, organizations must be innovative and creative. They encourage productivity through people. They give more attention to people. 
  • This has led to the concept of human capital. So it is more important to motivating people to be creative and innovative. 


Barriers to Motivation

Because we are dealing with people individuals who view things in their own idiosyncratic way a number of barriers may exit to prevent motivation. 
These barriers can lie either in the individual or in the organization. 

  • Despite the actual reasons for reducing motivation; we can identify some common problems. 
  • Problems begin to become apparent in the tension phase. 
  • During these activities, two major obstacles can exit dysfunctional tension and apathy.


Some tension is crucial to effort, but when that tension becomes dysfunctional, witness a change in individuals. 

For instance, suppose that initially and individuals were putting forth the effort, but did not satisfy his or her need. Maybe a second attempt was made, with the same result. 
At some point, the tension takes a turn of the worse creating stress and leading to dysfunctional tension.
